RUnderstanding how a database deals with and generates date functions is not too difficult once you have the basic grasp. After this basic understanding you will be able to solve many of your date problems associated with common needs. Explains how dating systems have evolved. Learning imbedded IF statements. Explanation: The field
Markup Calc
(see Define Fields) is a CALCULATION field that has 5 repetitions just like the quantity, size, description, etc. When a calculation field is set to repeat, the calculation
evaluates the data ONE LINE at a time - giving you the possbility of having a different value for each line of a repeating field. The
Markup Message
field will only show up if the total of the
Markup Calc
is greater than zero, otherwise it will reB
main blank.

~Looping Records: Use this ISO Learning Key to understand how to use the looping function. In our example here we have a database that would serve as a lookup for a
Quote of the Day
that would be found in another database. Our problem is such that, after we have elapsed so many days, the quotes are no longer looked up, because they expired. Our solution is an Auto-Date function.

The first part of this database will show you how to indicate which is the currently selected record from within a portal list. As indicated by the little start icon in the portal list you can see which record is the currently selected record.
The second part of the tutorial database is to highlight or show off the capability to use a global value list selection. You notice that not only can you show just any single color from the popup menu for the portal but you can also make a selB

The way that this file works is simple. Just before a search is complete we take advantage of being able to use SetField to push our search criteria into a global field. The way that we separate the search values is to use an uncommon character like the
character. This item is referred to as a delimiter that separates the search values. We then simply give the search a name and store it in a related database. This means we can store as many searches as we want. When we want to perform B
a certain stored search we just select it from the popup menu and then rebuild the search by putting the values separated by the
character back into a find.

This file contains all of the information that you need to know in order to create a basic script that will send a message from FlileMaker Pro to Claris Emailer.
There are a few modifications that you need to make to the file in order to get it to work flawlessly everytime. These things are issues like quotes and other special characters to AppleScript. You will find all of the information on making these changes in the ISO Issue #14 article that covers this technique
To see how fast theB
script is open Emailer and offset its window so you can see the outbox. Come back to this FileMaker database and click the Send button. It's BLAZINGLY FAST!!!
It teaches you how to create a batch reporting feature in your database. The concept is quite simple and could be execute without all the graphic flash that you find here. Simply put the user selects which reports they want by checking them and then clicks the report button. From the point that the Print button is click a REPORT CODE is generated based on the reports that the user clicked. A conditional script then simply scans the report code and print files according to those that were sB
elected.

When there is a pop-up list formatting set to a field, it always "pops up", which can be very distracting when you only have a few fields on the screen, like this one. Next to the username entry field there is now a button that invokes a pop-up list, but without it the user can just tab between the fields.

How to use a simple trick of adding repeating values to a field in a related file to allow you to search for multiple criteria.
There may be many times when you have a related file and you want to find not just those records that match based on one setting but many. In a normal search of a portal you can only search in the first value, this prevents you from searching for this AND that.
The trick is done by making the field you would be searching on into a repeating field. You
E are only using the repeats to search on. You are not storing data in them, as this would not wise to do. Since the days of FileMaker 2 you have been able to search for multiple values in repeating fields. This carries over to FileMaker 3.0. While you don
t want to use the repeats for storage you can use them for searching.

Not too many, but a few people know that on the Macintosh you can edit the palette colors of the individual 88 color spots that FileMaker Pro provides. What I did was go in and methodically swap out all of the differenent colors to create a full spectrum of the available colors as native FileMaker objects.
The reason this is valuable, is that the objects are not treated as bitmaps, taking up valuable disk space. The are treated as native objects and are drawn by the system and FileMa
ker Pro. This means *very* low overhead for your files. You will notice this by the small file size for all of the colors contained within this file.
